When Your Life Looks Fine But Something Still Feels Off
You have the job. The relationship, or the peace of not needing one right now. The health, mostly. The family that loves you, even with its complications. By almost every measure that gets used to define a good life, yours qualifies.
And yet. There's a heaviness that doesn't have an obvious source. A low-grade exhaustion that rest doesn't touch. A sense that something is off, even though you can't point to the thing that's wrong, because nothing is technically wrong at all.
I want to offer you a possibility that most people never get handed: what you're feeling might be grief, even without a loss you can name in a sentence.
We've been taught that grief needs a clear cause, a death, a diagnosis, a breakup, something you could write on a form if someone asked you to explain it. But grief doesn't actually require that kind of clean origin story. Grief is the human response to loss in any form, and some of the most disorienting griefs are the ones with no single event attached to them at all.
It can be grief over the life you expected to have by now, quietly accumulated across a hundred small moments where reality diverged from the plan. It can be grief over a version of yourself that existed before a slow accumulation of responsibility wore down your capacity for joy. It can be grief over relationships that didn't end dramatically, they just faded, and faded things are somehow harder to grieve than things that broke cleanly.
None of that requires an obituary to be real. If something in you has been quietly mourning something you can't quite name, that instinct isn't broken. It's actually accurate. You are allowed to call it what it is, even when it doesn't come with a clear explanation attached.
Sometimes the first step toward feeling better isn't finding the source. It's simply believing yourself when something in you says this is grief, whether or not you can explain exactly why.
