What nobody tells you about grief

What Nobody Tells You About the Other Side of Grief

September 03, 20262 min read

There's a version of "moving on" that gets sold to us, quietly, in almost every conversation about grief and hard seasons. It goes something like this: you go through the hard thing, you do the work, and eventually you arrive somewhere. A finish line. A place where the grief is behind you and life resumes the way it was supposed to.

I want to tell you plainly: that place doesn't exist, and searching for it will only leave you feeling like you're failing at something that was never actually achievable.

What does exist is something different, and honestly, something better. It's not a finish line. It's a way of carrying what happened that doesn't require you to pretend it didn't, and doesn't require it to run your life either. Wholeness isn't the absence of loss. It's what gets built after loss, brick by brick, decision by decision, on a foundation that includes what happened rather than pretending around it.

Here's what that actually looks like in a real life, not a theoretical one. It looks like being able to talk about what you lost without your voice breaking every single time, not because it stopped mattering, but because you've made room for it. It looks like laughing again, fully, without a flash of guilt showing up uninvited. It looks like making a decision about your future that factors in what you've learned, instead of either ignoring the lesson or letting it make every choice for you out of fear.

It looks like leading a team, or a family, or a room, from a place of genuine steadiness, not because nothing ever shakes you anymore, but because you know how to be shaken and still know exactly who you are.

If you're waiting to feel like you've "arrived" before you let yourself live fully again, I want to gently tell you that you may be waiting for something that was never coming. The invitation isn't to wait for wholeness to arrive and hand you permission. It's to start building it, today, with whatever you're currently carrying, exactly as it is.
